This is my 4th cam corder all my previous camcoders were CANON and never had any problems. This is my first cam corder from SONY. I am really disppointed. Sony offers only 90 day warranty. They offer flat rate repair for $520..I don't recommend to any one this camcorder.

Well I have a sony Hi 8 camcorder that is 9 years old never had a days problem. only purchased this one to get a lighter camera and ease of disc what a mistake we took a son to disney for his second birthday. paid extra for the halloween spectacular his birthday cake the parade to stay late cost us 125. tickets and 57.00 for a special birthday cake and this lousy camera the disc reads error. I have nothing from my sons second birthday. sony says send us the disc maybe we can retrieve it! not!!!! I depend on the camcorder to work when I need it this was the third time I used the camera and it failed . what happen sony???? I am so disappointed. I went out of my way to make his birthday the best our son was not suppose to live past six months this was a very special day for us and so you blew it I don't have it on video. never again will I trust this camera!!!! All we have is a bad disc and a unreliable camera. Thanks for not caring sony!!!!! sony service your lucky if you can understand their tech !!! I have purchased alot of sony products camera camcorder so on the old ones lasted. I guess I am back to lugging the big old one that works or purchasing a different brand!!!!

Movies play on other media players but on Windows Media Player there is no sound. I called Sony and they said that it was "Microsoft's problem", but I disagree, it is their CUSTOMER'S PROBLEM and they refused to help. Stay clear of this quirky pos.
My First High Definition Camcorder

I wanted a camcorder to record AVCHD directly to DVD media and play immediately in one of my Blu-ray players (one is a PS3). This camera looked like a good choice and I am very happy with the purchase. Although I understand most consumers will use a PC for editing and/or playback and/or storage of home videos, that isn't of any interest to me. If transfer to PC is the intended use, you probably don't want to record to DVD media and possibly don't want this camcorder but instead may want something with built-in memory or hard drive. I don't have a PC connected to any of my three HD displays but I do have Blu-ray players on each.
I am happy with image quality and ease of use. Quality with recording inside under low lighting is only average at best, I am sure. That one shortcoming is normal for camcorders in this price range with such a small CMOS sensor. Outside with sunlight is where I use the camcorder almost exclusively and the image recorded at highest bitrate looks great even using my projector and 100" screen. Image quality at the lower bitrates is excellent as well but I have decided to record at highest quality even if the improvement is only subtle.
I did purchase a couple of 4GB SanDisk PRO Duo memory sticks with MagicGate, and have recorded to one then copied the video to a DVD-R so I have no idea what the reviewer with complaints about memory sticks is referring to. Even that process was more trouble than I want to mess with so I plan to continue to record directly to DVD. I will keep the memory stick in the camcorder for those times when I don't have a DVD handy.
I can confirm the video recorded plays fine in my LG BD300, Sony BDP-S1, Oppo BDP-83 and 40GB Sony PS3. If I recall correctly, it takes a few seconds to format a DVD-R before recording and about 1 minute to finalize after recording before playing in another device, pretty painless requiring a couple of button pushes on the LCD screen. I did install an AVCHD player in my laptop but apparently I don't have the horsepower to play AVCHD, it is choppy and stutters, totally unusable.
