Product Description

The Sony DCR-DVD850 is a standard definition, DVD-format Handycam camcorder that offers a step up from the DCR-DVD650. In addition to simple touch panel operation, DVD convenience, and a 60X optical zoom lens, the DCR-DVD850 adds 16GB of embedded flash memory, allowing for extended recording times and Hybrid Plus capabilities, which let the camcorder record video directly to either DVD media, embedded memory, or removable Memory Stick PRO Duo media (media sold separately). The DCR-DVD850 replaces the DCR-DVD810 for 2009. Target consumers are those interested in the convenience and compatibility of the DVD format, as well as those who desire longer recording times out of their DVD format camcorders.

Sony Handycam DCRDVD850 Reviews

rated 4 out of 5 Happy

Everything i expected for the price. I just cant get over how expensive a memory pro duo stick is for this thing. and recording to a cd is a waste because your lucky to get a half hour per disk. But you can store quite a bit with its internal memory. All in all though, i like it, and would recommend.

rated 2 out of 5 Sony's DCR-DVD850 mostly a DOWNGRADE from the DCR-DV810
by veryounique from planet earth, where else!, 2010-01-27

Within 5 minutes of handling the DCR-DVD850 (850) I realized that Sony sacrificed some VERY KEY and VERY USEFUL features which I loved about its predecessor, the DCR-DVD810 (810). Sony did NOT need to remove the following IMPORTANT FEATURES JUST to add more internal memory and increase the zoom from the 810's 25x to the 850's 60x and!!!

This is what the 850 NO LONGER OFFERS:
(1) NO HOT SHOE for photo flash or video light
(2) NO REMOTE CONTROL
(3) NO NIGHT-LIGHT (no physical button OR menu item!!)
(4) NO QUICK-ON STAND-BY feature (no physical button OR menu item)

Isn't the whole point of designing a new model to ADD new features?
Why has Sony decided instead to REMOVE EXISTING, IMPORTANT, and HIGHLY USEFUL FETAURES?

In other words this is what Sony is telling 810 owners who are thinking of upgrading to the 850:
(1) you DO NOT need a HOT SHOE since you never use an external flash or video light!!
(2) you DO NOT need a REMOTE CONTROL feature because you will never want to control your camcorder from a distance!!
(3) you DO NOT need a NIGHT LIGHT feature because you will never want to shoot video in very low light situations!!
(4) you DO NOT need a QUICK-ON STAND-BY feature (which allowed the camcorder to be turned on INSTANTLY within 5/10/20/30 minute intervals) because you will never need to turn your camcorder on INSTANTLY instead of using the slow ON/OFF dial which wastes 5 seconds before you can shoot video!!
(5) you WILL NOT miss any of the above HIGHLY USEFUL FEATURES since you now have double the internal memory and double the zoom of the 810!!!

Doubling the internal memory and increasing the zoom may encourage people to shoot more video, BUT removing the HOT SHOE, the REMOTE CONTROL, the NIGHT LIGHT, and the QUICK ON STANDBY will DISCOURAGE people from shooting more video!

Now, how many Sony designers and marketers got paid top dollars to come up with this brilliant way to "upgrade" the DCR-DVD810?! And how many highly paid SONY execs approved this plan!?
Shame on you Sony!

This is a great camera. It is nice to have the option to record to a mini disc or directly to the hard drive. I feel this was worth every penny.

Don't buy it. Very limited use and the picture is substandard. tried everything I know to make a good picture come out of it.
